Anna has unusually good forage, and that has consequences

Most subdivisions are poor country for a honeybee. Clipped lawns, a few ornamental trees, and long stretches with nothing flowering. Anna is different in a specific way. Sherley Farms is a development of around three thousand homes built around a working sixty-five acre organic farm, east of Highway 5 near downtown. AnaCapri is built around a lagoon. Concentrated flowering forage and reliable water inside a residential area is a good year for a colony. Well-fed colonies build up fast in spring, and colonies that build up fast are the ones that swarm. A swarm needs somewhere to live, and it will take the closest suitable cavity, which in a neighbourhood means a soffit, a gable vent or a weep hole in one of the houses around it.

So the same thing that makes Anna pleasant to live in also makes it a place where bees end up in walls. That is not an argument against the farm. It is an argument for dealing with a colony promptly rather than hoping it moves on.

Swarm or colony

Swarm: a hanging cluster in the open, no comb, no honey, usually calm, and temporary. It is looking for a home right now, which is exactly why it is worth a same-day call. Relocating a swarm takes a fraction of the time and cost of cutting a colony out of a wall three months later, and it is the same bees either way.

Colony: steady traffic in and out of a single gap in a structure. There is comb inside. It will not leave, and it gets larger every week of the season.

Getting here, and why the road matters

Anna sits on State Highway 5 and FM 455, eleven miles northeast of McKinney. From Sherman it is about twenty-four miles.

In July 2026 TxDOT completed the last rural stretch of US 75 between Anna and the Grayson County line, widening it from four lanes to six. That is precisely the road between us and you, and it made an already short run more predictable. Anna and Melissa are the two closest towns we cover outside Grayson and Fannin counties.

Bees on the land around town

Anna's extraterritorial jurisdiction extends a mile in every direction from the city boundary, and the city regulates how land there is subdivided but not how it is zoned. In practice that means a ring of acreage, outbuildings and old treelines around the town.

That ring is where the feral colonies live, and it is the source of most of the swarms that end up inside town. If you have acreage out there with a colony in a barn, that is worth handling before spring rather than after.
